How can you be more creative at work? Is there a way to foster creativity? Can we captivate the eyes, minds and hearts of others? According to Jonah Lehrer, a neuroscience specialist, recently released: Imagine: How Creativity Works.
In an interview with NPR, Lehrer, talked about how creativity can be fostered in favorable conditions. The creative process brings great ideas and understanding how creativity works will help you know what to do when you “get stuck.”
Lehrer says that creativity isn’t just a singular verb…”looking at creativity from the perspective of the brain, we can see that creativity is actually a bundle of distinct mental processes.” Creativity is complicated and requires the ability to understand a number of moving parts.
But how to you harness your creativity and what do you do if you get stuck? “Why you should stop trying to harness your brain, and instead help your brain get our of its harness.” Lehrer says that it’s really about how you handle getting stuck or “what happens when you hit a wall.”
The answer, take a walk, relax, step away from the office, find inspiration… “Alpha waves are a signal in the brain that’s closely correlated with states of relaxation. And what scientists have found is that when people are relaxed, they’re much more likely to have those big ‘A ha!’ moments, those moments of insight where these seemingly impossible problems get solved.”
