IBM Announces New CEO: Virginia Rometty
November 1, 2011 No CommentsOn the 25th of October International Business Machines Corp. announced that Virginia Rometty would be taking the place of Samuel Palmisano as chief executive officer. Ms. Rometty feared she would get too old and never be given the chance as she is only six years younger than Palmisano. Virginia worked at IBM for 30 years before getting the chance to run IBM.
Virginia, who goes by “Ginni” to colleagues, will have a multitude of challenges ahead of her. Former CEO Palmisano was able to increase shares by making tough decisions such as getting ride of IBM’s PC business and increasing the companies exposure.
Ms. Rometty is by no means unprepared. She worked at IBM in marketing strategy and sales, she managed to make IBM a top seller of strategic advice by integrating PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP’s consulting business. Maggie Wilderotter, CEO of Frontier Communications Corp, coached Rometty to be a better executive and what assignments to take on that would help her grow.
