N.C. students lacking financial aid

16% of today’s grants are certain for North Carolina’s students. The current $210 million given to students of low-income families will decrease to $34 million; money received from state lottery proceeds. How did such a dramatic drop in financial aid come about and how will people be able to cope without it?

North Carolina’s largest source for financial aid comes from the state’s fund of unclaimed property. This source has been supporting approximately 90,000 to 100,000 low- to middle-income students, who do not need to pay back the money they receive. Today these funds have trickled down and are close to nothing, unable to give as much help to the ones that need it as it used to. This decrease in state grants will mean the end of many students’ college career. Mary Johnston of Monroe explained that her son would not be able to proceed with his education. “We need more, not less.” Sophomore Cassandra Stokes agrees as she is faced with the same problem. “If I did not get grants and loans, I would not be here at all.”
